Theo van den Boogaard (Castricum, March 25, 1948) is one of the greatest artists in the Netherlands. Already at the age of 16 he released his first book “Mark, butter with the fish” in an edition of 15,000 pieces. His “Ans and Hans get the chance” from 1969 is a groundbreaking underground strip, in which free sexuality is drawn in detail. “Jan and Alleman”, “Abe”, “Witje and Gert” and “The Ideographer” follow.

The biggest successes come in the 80s and 90s when Theo De Klare Lijn embraces. His comic series Sjef van Oekel, made together with Wim T. Schippers, becomes one of the most popular series of those decades. The absurd humor of Schippers and the excellent drawing skills increase the popularity of the comic to great heights. There will be translations in French, Spanish, German, English and Danish. “Leon La Terror” is particularly popular in France. In these glory years, Van den Boogaard also draws fantastic records for advertising campaigns. In 1989, Theo rightly wins the Dutch Stripschap prize for his entire oeuvre.

In 1992 there is a retrospective exhibition from the entire oeuvre in the Frans Hals Museum, Haarlem.
This was then integrally taken over by Fries Museum Leeuwarden, Broerekerk Zwolle, Bruggebouw Emmen, and Stedelijk Museum Roermond. It was then integrally taken over by the French town of Blois and opened by the French culture minister Jack Lang. Although not yet besides the Night Watch, you can also find his work in the collection of the Rijksmuseum. We expect a prominent place to be made available for this.

After Sjef van Oekel, Van den Boogaard is still happily drawing on it. As a “Serial draftsman”, he completes, among other things, a magical book around the songs of his youth hero Bob Dylan (“Bob Dylan Illustrated”)

A special mention also deserves the series “Sidekicks”, where homo-erotic drawings in a very free style are central.

To this day, Theo draws time for HP. Recently 2 new books have been published with a lot of new work (“Hap, Snap” and “Goedsniks or Kwaadsniks”). If you don’t have one yet, ask for it at the better bookstore / comics store. New albums from this series will be released in 2026. Moreover, his second book about youth idol Bob Dylan “Dylan: Illuminated” will see the light.

Theo van den Boogaard rightly loves his originals, his “children” and is not shitty about selling originals.

In consultation with Theo, however, we can offer a number of drawings by Sjef van Oekel from his glory years exclusively. This is a unique opportunity to get work from one of the greatest “Dutch masters”.
